Yeah! London won! But now the post-vote partying is over, what does it mean to young people that the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be staged in seven years time?

Seven years is a long time
The Games may seem like a long way off, but if you want to get involved, there is a lot going on in the years leading up to the Games. Below are some things you might want to think about doing now.

Get training
Do you think you have what it takes to be an Olympic athlete? You may be a fast runner, but you can't hang around waiting for some one to notice. Ask at your school about entering competitions now. Are there any running clubs for young people in your area?
The Olympic and Paralympic Games include many different sports. For example, there will be four different kinds of cycling in the 2012 Olympics - track, road, mountain and BMX. Now might be the time to try out a new sport that suits you, and see where you can take it. See the Get Active section of this site for some ideas.

Volunteer to help
You can sign up now to be a volunteer at the Games, and to experience the atmosphere first hand. Around 70,000 people will be needed to volunteer at the Games - it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you can sign up now!

Get your school involved
There is a schools pack available to help your school get involved with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It's about more than just sport
A festival of world culture will run throughout the summer of 2012, showcasing the best of London's dance, music and performance talent. If performing is your thing, you could even be involved in the opening or closing ceremonies.

What about after the Games?
Many sports facilities are being built for the Games, and there will be a lot left at the end for everyone to use.

Some of the things that are being built include:

  • An aquatics centre
  • A velopark
  • Olympic Stadium
  • Hockey centre
  • Multi-sport arenas
