University of Aberdeen School of Medicine
The School of Medicine alongside the School of Medical Sciences offers undergraduate medicine, a BSc programme in Health Science, and a wide range of postgraduate taught courses and research opportunities across the spectrum of medicine and medical science.
The University of Aberdeen had the first chair of medicine in the English- speaking world. This tradition of innovation in medicine and medical science has been maintained. The University of Aberdeen is home to a thriving medical school, which combines high quality teaching and training with excellence in research.
Excellence in teaching was recognised when the course in undergraduate medicine [MBChB] was awarded the maximum rating in the most recent Scottish Higher Education Funding Council’s Teaching Quality Assessment Exercise. The GMC has also recognised areas of good practice in and approved the curriculum. The BSc Health Sciences degree course is the only one of its type in Scotland.
Research is centred around 6 principal areas, or themes, within the Schools of Medicine and Medical Sciences. These broad themes are Applied Health Sciences [which includes researchers in Environmental and Occupational Medicine, General Practice and Primary Care, Health Economics Research Unit, Health Services Research Unit, Medicine and Therapeutics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Public Health], Immunity and Inflammation [which encompasses research groups in oncology and vascular medicine as well as in immunology], Microbiology, Cell Biology, Bone and Musculoskeletal and Neuroscience. Among these themes are research Assessment Exercise [RAE] 5 and 5* research groups. A particular strength is Health Services Research, which was the only such group in Scotland rated RAE 5. The clinicians and scientists of international quality within our research themes are central to the delivery of the broad range of postgraduate taught courses on offer.
The Institute of Medical Sciences and the Institute of Applied Health Sciences have new purpose built buildings, incorporating state of the art facilities, located on the same site as and in close proximity to the major teaching hospital serving the North East of Scotland. This environment enables scientists and clinicians to interact and has facilitated the development of high quality translational research programmes within the Schools of Medicine and Medical Sciences.
