University of Bristol - The Department of Oral and Dental Science

The Department of Oral and Dental Science is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol and is an integral component of the Dental Hospital associated with the United Bristol Healthcare Trust. We have been training Dental Surgeons since 1906 and Professionals Complementary to Dentistry since 1972. The Dental School and Hospital exist side by side within the same buildings, within easy walking distance of the main University of Bristol Campus.

The KEY AIMS of the Department of Oral and Dental Science are to:

  • Equip students with a core of appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to clinical dental practice in the 21st century
  • Encourage students to explore beyond that core and develop within a research-rich environment
  • Produce dentists who are patient-focused, good communicators, empathetic and able to work well in teams
  • Produce dentists equipped for life-long learning and eager to pass their knowledge, understanding and skills to the next generation of healthcare professionals
  • Prepare students to take their place in the community and hospital services

Support the training of Dental Care professionals, with emphasis on the dental tea

The Bristol Dental School welcomes applications from suitably qualified school leavers, graduates, and mature and overseas students. The Dental School staff includes many nationally and internationally respected clinicians and researchers and as a School, we are justly proud of our achievements in research, our progress in teaching and our clinical record.

New Developments

The University of Bristol have agreed a significant expansion of the undergraduate BDS numbers from 55 to 88 annually; the first intake of this new student cohort was October 2005.

Over the next three years (2005-2008), there will be a significant re-development of the Bristol Dental Hospital site. Specific plans include an increase in dental chair numbers, an extension of the Clinical Skills Laboratory, rationalisation of existing space, improved student teaching facilities (laboratories, IT, library), improved student accommodation and incorporation of PCD training.

There will also be the development of two new “teaching outreach centres” with the aim of increasing exposure of undergraduates to patients.

There has been major revision of the undergraduate BDS curriculum. A new and innovative programme will be introduced in October 2006. The aim is to introduce students to clinical practice in their second year and to deliver a modern teaching programme.
