The LSE: Mathematics Department

The LSE Mathematics Department is an active research unit within a world-class social science institution. It is currently in a period of growth, and aims to be a leading centre for Mathematics in the Social Sciences.

The strengths of the Department are in applications of Mathematics to the Social Sciences and in Discrete Mathematics. The Centre for Discrete and Applicable Mathematics (CDAM) is based in the Department; its activities include the production of an extensive series of Research Reports, and the hosting of a well-attended weekly research seminar every Thursday during term-time.

On the teaching side, the Mathematics Department offers a popular and successful BSc degree in Mathematics and Economics, and also contributes to the BSc degree in Business Mathematics and Statistics (administrated by the Statistics Department). At graduate level, we launched the MSc in Applicable Mathematics in October 2004, and the programme is proving very popular. There are opportunities for research students (MPhil/PhD) in the Mathematics Department, and further information on our PhD Programme can be found here.
