The University of Hull is a research-led, teaching institution which has been providing students with a high quality experience of undergraduate education for many years. National surveys of UK universities have emphasised the excellent teaching, the high quality of research, the rigorous academic standards and the exceptional graduate employment record to be found at Hull. Social science graduates from the fields of criminology, sociology, social policy and related disciplines are in continued demand from employers who respect and value the high level of social science education and training that we provide.

The Department of Criminology and Sociological Studies at the University of Hull is a multi-disciplinary department with a distinctive profile of learning and teaching that brings together staff expertise in criminology, social policy, sociology and anthropology. Staff are committed to the development of social science knowledge that is both theoretically informed and empirically grounded in the social world. All academic staff in the department are research active which means that they are actively engaged in the production of knowledge which then informs the depth and quality of the teaching.

Central to all of our degree programmes is the notion of enabling students to develop a solid grounding in social science methods of investigation in order to understand the social world. These methods are applied to a variety of areas of expertise and our students are encouraged to think critically about issues and debates within the social world, and to develop their own particular areas of interest within our degree programmes.
