Technical Roles
Do you like working on the vehicle itself? Do you enjoy practical work?
 If you get a buzz out of taking things apart and putting them back together again quickly, then the job in Vehicle Fitting could be just right for you. You will work in a highly efficient team that can carry out anything from removing and fitting tyres, exhausts and batteries to servicing and replacing mechanical or electrical parts. You might work in a dedicated centre or workshop, where you will need to work speedily and safely in order to provide customers with a swift and professional service, often while they wait.

Technical occupations cover both of these aspects. The motor industry needs you to keep up with technological growth and to handle the latest technical developments. For these reasons, you will need to gain detailed knowledge and skills in each technical occupation.

There are a number of career paths you could follow:-

  • Vehicle Fitting:
  • Fast-Fit Technician
  • Mobile Electronics and Security Technician
  • Specialist Tyre Fitter

Vehicle Maintenance and Repair:

  • Auto Electrician
  • Commercial Vehicle Technician
  • Light Vehicle Technician
  • Motorcycle Technician
  • Roadside Recovery Technician
  • Roadside Assistance Technician
  • Vehicle Valeter

Other role areas include:

  • Sales/Marketing Roles

Fast-Fit Technician
Do you enjoy working with customers? Are you interested in working on the vehicle itself? Why not pursue a career as a fast-fit technician?
As a fast-fit technician you will replace components in motor vehicles - usually while the customers are waiting.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Inspecting / testing motor vehicle components
  • Diagnosing faults
  • Repairing and replacing faulty parts
  • Installing new components
  • Liaising with customers

To become a fast-fit technician, you might be well advised to do an apprenticeship, where you would gain technical certificates designed to give you the knowledge and skill you need and an NVQ / SVQ in Vehicle Fitting available at levels 1 and 2 to prove your occupational competence. In addition you will also get your Key or Core Skills.

Specialist Tyre Fitter
Do Are you good at practical work? Do you like working on the vehicle itself?
 If so, a career as a specialist tyre fitter might be right for you. In this job, you get to deal with a large variety of vehicles, from cars through to commercial vehicles. As a specialist tyre fitter the actual ‘fitting of a tyre’ is only one part of the job.

Your other tasks will include:

  • Informing and advising customers
  • Checking tyres for defects
  • Replacing tyres
  • Wheel balancing and alignment

To become a fast-fit technician, you might be well advised to do an apprenticeship, where you would gain technical certificates designed to give you the knowledge and skill you need and an NVQ/SVQ in Vehicle Fitting is available at levels 1 and 2 to prove your occupational competence.
