Farriery

Farriery is the shoeing of horses and similar animals. A farrier is a skilled craftsperson who makes shoes for all types of horses’ feet according to the needs and welfare of the animal.

Farriers are increasingly working with veterinary surgeons and equine hospitals to provide corrective shoeing and surgical farriery. A farrier is not a blacksmith, but needs training in blacksmithing in order to make or modify the shoes correctly.

There are an estimated 2,455 people qualified to work in farriery in Great Britain, plus 467 in training with the Farriery Training Service. About 100 apprentices are taken on every year to train with an approved training farrier. The competition for places is very strong.
