Animal technology
Animal technology includes the promotion and maintenance of animals to be used in scientific research, (mainly rodent species, but also smaller numbers of rabbits, dogs, cats etc.) together with the husbandry, care and welfare of animals bred and used in this work.
Mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters are the most usual species. The different needs and requirements of these animals are the responsibility of animal technicians.
Almost two thirds of laboratory animals are used for understanding disease and testing new medicines and treatments. No UK animal testing is undertaken on cosmetic or tobacco products.
It is estimated that there are about 285 animal technology businesses currently employing 3,400 people. Overall the aim is to reduce the number of animals being used in scientific research by the use of alternative methods of testing.
